Virtual Night Life, Vol. 4

Join us for Vol. 4 of Virtual NightLife to explore the nature of togetherness, and what it means when we’re all physically apart.

Now more than ever, we’re all in this together and we’re just as curious as you are to see what happens. Log-on for this experimental showcase, streaming live on YouTube and Facebook.

Event Highlights:

  • Why do birds of a feather flock together? Dr. Jack Dumbacher, the Academy’s Curator of Ornithology and Mammalogy, explains the science behind the idiom with a talk on why birds (and other organisms) gather in groups.

  • Oakland’s Cunamacué shares dance inspired by generations of Afro-Peruvian culture.

  • Artist and filmmaker Ivan Cash screens his short film, “A Social Distance,” exploring the theme of connection under quarantine.

  • Some foods feel like a hug from the inside. Jocelyn Jackson (People’s Kitchen Collective and JUSTUS Kitchen) and Aileen Suzara (PKC collaborator and Sariwa) invite you into their kitchens to explore the delicious life cycle of the sweet potato and share stories of the sweet potato’s cultural, ecological, & ancestral significance in their lives.

  • Evolutionary biologist and nudibranch enthusiast Allison Fritts-Penniman talks about the theory of “isolation by distance,” and how some nudibranch species maintain connectivity across oceans.
